Dictates a 48hour max working week plus a number of rest requirements:
– minimum of 11 hours’ continuous rest in every 24hour period
– minimum rest break of 20 minutes after every six hours worked
– minimum period of 24 hours’ continuous rest in each seven day period (or 48 hours in a 14 day period)
– minimum of four weeks’ paid annual leave
– maximum of eight hours’ work in each 24 hours for night workers.
Hospital at night
This was first proposed as a way of helping to comply with EWDT, and also maintain effective clinical care within the NHS.
The aim of HAN is to have a multidisciplinary team which has the full range of skills to provide immediate care to patients at night and the idea is that the MDT can handle emergencies for a variety of specialties. The team may be coordinated by a senior nurse, such as a clinical site manager.
Allows the reduction in numbers of junior doctors at night, without compromising quality of care.

NHS Pay Modernisation in England – Agenda for Change project implemented between December 2004 and December 2006 for reforming pay in the NHS for 1.1 million staff and in 2007/08 represented a pay bill in excess of £28 billion.
Staff groups covered by Agenda for Change include nurses, other healthcare professionals (e.g. occupational therapists, radiographers) and infrastructure support
Doctors, dentists and very senior managers in NHS organisations are not covered.
